Bus station in Trinidad

The streets of Trinidad

Trinidad

Next stop, Trinidad.

This is our view from our casa particular.

Rancho Luna #2

Rancho Luna #1

The beach Rancho Luna situated at the bay of Cienfuegos.

Cienfuegos waterfront

The prado in Cienfugeos- the longest street in Cuba - leads all the way from the city centre to the peninsula Punta Gorda.

Cienfuegos city

Che is celebrated everywhere.
Here, in the streets of Cienfuegos.

Gone fishing

Bay view from Cienfuegos. Catching shrimps, we imagine.

The King of Mambo

A local - and national - celebrity in Cienfuegos:
Benny Moré, the king of mambo.

Cienfuegos Casa

After a fab time in Havana we caught a bus to Cienfuegos.
This is the casa particular that we stayed in.

Cars

Cars in the fields of tobacco, Pinar del Río.

Cuba's treasured tobacco

Cigars for sale in Pinar del Río.

In fact, some of these are the very cigars I brought home to friends of mine.

Tobacco farmer

Smoking a cigar in the province of Pinar del Río.

Viñales

Valle de Viñales west of Havana province.
We did a one-day bus tour to the province of Pinar del Río famous for its rust-red soil and fields of tobacco

Santería woman

Santería is the most widespread of the religious beliefs brought to Cuba by African slaves. Now an integrated part of daily life; you'll see initiates dressed in white everywhere you go. Just like here in Plaza de la Catedral in Havana.

t

The Prado

The boulevard Paseo de Martí - better known as Prado - as seen from the rooftop restaurant at Hotel Sevilla. The Prado runs all the way from Parque Central to the Malecón.

Cigar woman

You get used to the smell of tobacco just everywhere. The cigar woman in the wheelchair hung out in old Havana.

Purlpe car

One of many fantastic cars in Havana. This one parked in front of the Capitolio.

Celebrating José Martí

Having a break during the big march for José Martí.

Marching for Martí

School children rehearsing their march for José Martí's birthday Jan. 28 (the apostle of Cuban independence was born in Havana 1863).

Revolutionary dancing

Kat dances inside the Museo de la Revolución.

Museo de la Revolución

The museum is housed in the former Palacio Presidencial - the site of the unsuccessful assassination attempt against Batista.

Malecón #3

Havana's waterfront.

Malecón #2

The Morro lighthouse at the end of the Malecón.

The Malecón #1

Waves splash high over Malecón, the 8km seawall along the coast of Havana.

Woman in white

Posing for the tourists in old Havana.

Habana Radio

Cuban Radio is a different experience.
Each channel we've come across all offer the same: a blend of cheasy amor-dolor guitar tunes, literature readings, American pop hits without the vocals and a whole lot of classical music. Now and then you have the news which mostly talks about la revolucion and US suppression.

Dos Gardenias

Two Gardenias in Havana

Dos gardenias para tí,
con ellas quiero decir,
te quiero, te adoro, mi vida,
ponle toda tu atención,
porque son tu corazón y el mío.

(Isolina Carrillo)

Library at Capitolio

The Capitolio Nacional - similar to the US Capitol Building - now houses the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology. Here's the mahogany-covered library.

Book market

Most of the books had to do with Che and La Revolución.

Working Class Hero

A working class hero is something to be. Taller Experimental de Gráfica, Havana.

Celebrating Fidel

80 years more, Fidel?!

Plaza de San Fransisco de Asís

Another beautiful plaza.

Another coco driver

Our coco man

It's a serious job driving a moped with an orange coco shelter.

Coco with a view

A view of Havana's chinatown from a coco taxi.

Coco taxis

Another feature of Havana traffic: Cocos.

Bici taxi

At one point we did have the dreadful experience of riding one of these. If you think bicycling is the same in Havana as in Copenhagen, then think again.

Hemingway's mojitos

La Bodequita del Medio, the bar where Ernest Hemingway was sipping mojitos.

Plaza de la Catedral

My favourite plaza in Havana.

The Lonely Planet star

Believe it or not, in old Havana we met the exact same man who's on the cover of the latest Lonely Planet edition of our guidebook. Odd? Yes. But have a look yourself:

Blue car

You can't help falling in love with the old American cars in the streets of Havana.

Our girls in Havana

That's our room! Hotel Sevilla, Havana.

Cuban breakfast

Papaya (fruta bomba), pineapple (piña), egg (huevo) and bread (pan).

Morning in Havana

View from our room.

Cuba

Jan 25, 2007. Just awoken in room 501, Sevilla Hotel. Our Man in Havana has left the room for Kat and me.
